Anonymous asked: Hi Kameelah, I hope this finds you well. I wanted to ask are there any books/articles/journals/movies/documentaries/blogs that you seek inspiration from as a muslim woman? I remember you contributed to an anthology but I haven't been able to remember the name of it. Thank you.

So sorry for the delay! I read A LOT so the list below is just a sampling of things that inspire me as a human being, but specifically as a Muslim woman:

Believing Women in Islam: Unreading Patriarchal Interpretations of the Qur’an by Asma Barlas, Inside the Gender Jihad: Women’s Reform in Islam by Amina Wadud, and Qur’an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman’s Perspective by Amina Wadud

And the Qu’ran itself is an excellent starting point … the books above cannot be “accessed” unless there is a thorough understanding of the Qu’ran itself. I also think it is helpful to read about how the Qu’ran was revealed, compiled, and disseminated. I really love Ulum Al-Quran by Ahmad Von Denffer.

I also love Sufi texts and one of my favorites is Ibn Ata’ Illah’s Kitab-al-Hakim.
